Sleep Apnea and Cape Medical Supply
Sleep Apnea is a condition which causes excessive daytime drowsiness and a host of other issues in those who suffer from it. Typically patients seek treatment after initial discussions with their physician or a specialist and a visit to a sleep lab for diagnostic work. Following diagnosis most patients will seek a simple, non-invasive therapy with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).
Successful treatment for this condition is contingent upon a solid clinical relationship with the physician, equipment provider and specialist, ongoing compliance with the treatment, and regular re-fitting of the mask and associated accessories. At Cape Medical Supply we understand our role in treating sleep apnea patients is critical to their ongoing compliance and success, which is why we aggressively work with patients to ensure they have the equipment they need, stay current with new equipment needs and we regularly work with patients and their physicians to check on data cards to ensure they are being used properly. For more information on our Clinical Treatment for our Sleep Apnea patients, please see our Sleep Better program.
This is another area where the proper compliment of the latest technologies and the best staff work in tandem to produce the best outcomes; our clinical excellence, working in partnership with the latest technologies from market leaders like ResMed, Respironics, Fisher & Paykel and others, makes us the market leader for the region.
How Do I Know if I have Sleep Apnea?
Diagnosing sleep apnea is a complex process, involving your physician, an independent sleep lab, and possibly a specialist. But what are the symptoms of sleep apnea? The most basic symptoms are excessive daytime drowsiness and excessive snoring; if you are experiencing any abnormal sleep issues you should consult with your physician and decide together on the proper next course of action.
The Epworth Sleepiness Scale is one method to determine whether you have a sleep disorder; answering the below questions is not indicative of a diagnosis, but it may warrant a further conversation with your physician if the results are high enough.
How likely are you to fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to feeling just tired? This refers to your usual way of life in recent times.
Even if you have not done some of these things recently, try to work out how they would have affected you. Use the following scale to choose the most appropriate number for each situation.
Epworth Sleepiness Scale
0 = would never doze
1 = slight chance of dozing
2 = moderate chance of dozing
3 = high chance of dozing
Situation
Sitting and Reading
Watching TV
Sitting Inactive in a Public Place
Passenger in a Car for an Hour without Break
Lying Down for a Rest in the Afternoon
Sitting and Talking with Someone
Sitting Quietly After a Lunch with no Alcohol
In a Car, while Stopped for a Few Minutes in Traffic
Total Score = ___________
The higher your score, the greater the chance you have sleep apnea; for a reference point, approximately half of patients tested with an Epworth Score over 10 were ultimately diagnosed with sleep apnea.
Cape Medical Supply works with the leading diagnostic facilities, specialists, and traditional physicians in the area to ensure patients are cared for the way they need to be to ensure positive outcomes with sleep therapy treatment.
If you have specific questions about your medical condition or diagnostic issues, please consult with your physician.
