Sandwich, MA, March 17, 2008: Representatives of Cape Medical Supply recently met with staff leaders of Senator Edward Kennedy, Senator John Kerry and Congressman William Delahunt to advocate for stronger homecare policies in Medicare. The effort was part of the annual American Association for Homecare 2008 Washington Legislative Conference, held March 4-6 in Washington, D.C.
Cape Medical Supply President and CEO Gary Sheehan and Director of Skilled Nursing Residences Rob Fessler met with legislators to discuss specific ways to preserve patient access to homecare. Currently, Congress is considering a number of steps that would make it harder to provide high quality durable medical equipment and services such as home oxygen therapy and power wheelchairs for Medicare beneficiaries.
“Durable medical equipment and services provided in the home are highly cost-effective and the home is where seniors prefer to receive care,” said Sheehan. “So it’s important to inform policymakers about the benefits of homecare to preserve access to this type of care.”
A December 2007 Harris survey found that three out of four (74 percent) of Americans believe homecare is part of the solution to the problem of rapidly increasing Medicare spending for America’s seniors. For more information, visit www.capemedical.com and www.aahomecare.org.
