Healthcare Reform
Published on 03/12/09 05:53PM by Gary SheehanAny major reform of the United States healthcare system should have major incentives for enhanced homecare services; it remains the slowest growing sub-sector of Medicare, the most efficient pricing environment for care delivery, and the most desired place for patients to receive their care.
The initial White House Forum on Healthcare Reform had one representative from the homecare sector; 150 so called leaders and visionaries from the world of healthcare and policy and only one person with substantial homecare interests?
I remain incredibly hopeful for the changes that can be brought through reforming a broken system, but we must ensure the process is not dominated by the largest institutions, and corporations (for-profit and not-for-profit) that stand to gain the most by shaping reform to their own interests. I own a small business, am a cancer survivor and have a passion, to my core, for the work being done by many companies in our sector; we deserve better federal recognition and they must realize as they set these important policies, that though we are small, and a veritable rounding error against some of the larger companies in healthcare, we are critical to cost containment and to creating the type of safety nets necessary for a strong and efficacious healthcare system.
This is an incredibly important conversation to have and the time is certainly now for some wholesale changes to the system.
